Barbara Mackey's Bio
After receiving her BA and MA (1962 & 1965) from the University of Michigan,
Barbara Mackey taught speech and theater courses and directed plays at
Southern University of Louisiana, the largest Black institution of higher
learning in the United States. Subsequently, she worked on the Poverty Program
in Sparta, Georgia teaching creative dramatics in the county schools and
directing plays. While teaching at Penn State, she took a semester as an
International Visiting Professor at Kolej Damansara Utama, in Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia. Returning to graduate studies, Dr. Mackey received her Ph.D. in theater
from Bowling Green State University in 1996. Since then she has taught in schools
in the Toledo area, her favorite courses being Intro to Theater and Ethnic
Diversity in Performance.
Dr. Mackey has been a member of St. Andrews since her return to Ann Arbor in 1999,
and she became a member of the Oasis board shortly thereafter and subsequently became
board president in 2007.
She was married to the Reverend Peter D. Mackey for 29 years
and has a daughter, Jessica Siobhan, living on the west coast. Dr. Mackey likes to
read, sing, and play
the flute.
