Oasis - About Us
Thalia Johnson's Bio
Earlier years include time spent as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Malaysia, then nearly 25
years as an Extension 4-H Youth Agent with Michigan State University in both the upper and
lower peninsulas. The last 15 years in that job were in Lenawee County.
After retirement, along with 10 other community members, we formed Cambios, Inc., a non-profit
organization providing anti-racism resources and programs for schools and families. Ordained
a deacon in 1987, this and other social justice issues have been the main focus of my ministry.
I grew up in Dexter and, after being away for almost 40 years, moved back to the Ann Arbor area
in 2007. Now serving as deacon at the Church of the Incarnation, I joined the Oasis board early
in 2008. Time has also been spent the past three years helping to form a PFLAG Chapter in
Lenawee County. Other activities related to TBLG efforts include contacting voters to oppose
Proposition 2 in 2004 and, after it passed, was part of The Peninsula Group, formed to develop a
strategic plan, statewide, to provide better coordination and communications among TBLG advocacy
groups.
As an alternate deputy from the Diocese of Michigan, I attended both the 2006 and 2009
General Conventions of the Episcopal Church. I enjoy working with youth, serving groups, faith
communities, and anyone else in understanding the web of community approaches for discussion around
TBLG issues, especially in rural settings.
